Abstract

Introduction. Esports, as a dynamic field, not only forms new formats of entertainment and competition, but also gives rise to a number of pertinent issues. Its accelerated development has been a result of rapid technological progress and increased consumer and investor interest in this sector.

The aim is to investigate the contemporary problems of esports and to substantiate ways of solving them.

Methods: analysis of scientific and methodological literature and Internet data, synthesis, systematization, and generalization.

Results. This review examines the key contemporary problems of esports that affect its development. The main attention is given to aspects such as cheating, doping, emotional overload and toxicity, stigmatization, the impact of game publishers, and ecological challenges. Cheating in esports, caused by rapid technological progress, undermines the foundations of fair competition and necessitates the development of complex anti-cheat systems. Doping in esports, often involving the use of substances to enhance cognitive functions, creates unfair conditions in competitions and requires strict control. Emotional overload and toxicity in the game lead to psychological and team problems, demanding the development of emotional intelligence skills and stress management strategies. The stigmatization of esports arises from a limited perception of sports, focusing on physical activity, and requires a redefinition of sports to include competitiveness and strategic thinking. Game publishers influence esports through financing and control over the rules, which can limit the autonomy of esports organizations and lead to conflicts of interest. The challenge of legal regulation in esports at the global level arises due to rapid technological development, the lack of unified standards, and differences in legal systems across various countries, which complicates the recognition of esports as an oficial sport and leads to diversity in the legal status of players and contracts. The ecological challenges of esports, including high energy consumption and the production of electronic waste, require attention and the implementation of sustainable strategies.

Conclusion. The analysis has shown that to ensure effective development of esports, comprehensive strategies that take into account various challenges are necessary.
