Attitude of middle school-aged students towards physical education and sports

Abstract

Introduction and purpose of the study. The article presents the results of a questionnaire survey of students of grades 7-9 regarding their attitude to the subject “Physical Culture” and the process of personality formation. The purpose of the study is to determine the attitude of students of grades 7-9 to physical culture and sports in order to develop a technology for the formation of personal physical culture. Material and methods. The following methods were used during the research: data analysis of scientific and methodical literature, regulatory and legal documents, sociological and statistical methods. 443 students aged 14-16 took part in the survey, including 182 seventh-graders (including 74 boys and 108 girls), 106 eighth-graders (including 46 boys and 60 girls), and 155 ninth-graders (including 68 boys and 87 girls). The results. The main motives of students for physical education and sports, the reasons that prevent them from doing it, the attitude towards physical education lessons and the conditions that do not satisfy teenagers in the process of organizing and conducting classes are analyzed. The percentage distribution of schoolchildren who do and do not do sports in extracurricular time, the understanding of the importance of the formation of individual physical culture for further implementation in educational, social, professional activities were determined. Conclusions. The presence of problems in the formation of personal physical culture of schoolchildren has been determined, which are related to the need for: increasing interest in physical culture and sports; improvement of organizational conditions for carrying out forms of work on physical education; increasing the level of theoretical knowledge for the formation of physical culture values; improvement of the teacher’s professional skills; formation of abilities and skills of developing an individual trajectory of personal physical culture; use of means of physical education, which affect the level of personal growth and formation of character traits of teenagers, etc.
