Abstract

Introduction and Purpose of the Study: The lack of a systematic approach to forming motivation for physical activity among Chinese students and the insuficient study of the influence of external and internal factors on motivation in the process of physical education in higher education institutions in China are pressing issues. The need to analyze the structural components of physical activity and motivation of young students is due to the need to determine specific approaches to forming motivation for physical activity, a healthy lifestyle, and maintaining physical activity in the university environment in China. Purpose of the Study: To investigate the structure of physical activity and motivation of young students in China using factor analysis. Materials and Methods: The scientific experiment involved students from 11 higher educational institutions in China. The total number of respondents was 1855 people from the 1st and 2nd year of study, including 945 young men and 910 girls. To solve the set tasks, a complex of methods was used: theoretical analysis, generalization of data from scientific and methodological literature and documentary materials; mathematical and statistical processing of factual mate-rial; factor analysis (SPSS 16.0); frequency analysis. Results: Based on the results of the study, we conducted a factor analysis of the structural components that determine the physical condition, physical activity and need-motivational priorities among young people in China. Factor analysis made it possible to identify the main variables and establish relationships between them, revealing the key factors that affect physical activity and motivation for physical activity among Chinese students. Conclusions: The results of the study revealed a different perception among Chinese students of the need and benefits of physical activity for self-improvement and improving the level of physical fitness and health. It is proved that the lack of physical activity both in young men (χ2=45.485; df=1; p<0.05) and girls (χ2=34.850; df=1; p<0.05) statistically significantly affects a decrease in the level of their self-esteem of physical fitness and health status. A moderate correlation was found between physical exercises and the self-assessment of physical fitness and health status of the study participants (V=0.224; p<0.05). Among those who have a proper level of physical activity, there is a statistically significantly higher self-esteem compared to those who do not engage in physical activity (χ2=58.206; df=1; p<0.05).
